Lene Marlin - Sitting Down Here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClSVzlObxSc

I'm sitting down here, but hey you can't see me
Your words cut rather deeply, they're just some other lies
I'm hiding from a distance, I've got to pay the price
Defending all against it, I really dont know why
You're obsessed with all my secrets, you always make me cry
You seem to wanna hurt me, no matter what I do
I'm telling just a couple, but somehow it gets to you
But I've learned how to get revenge, and I swear you'll experience that some day
I'm sitting down here, but hey, you cant see me
Kinda invisible, you don't sense my stay
Not really hiding, not like a shadow
Just thought I would join you for one day
I'm sitting down here, but hey, you can't see me
I'm trying not to avoid you, just dont wanna hear your voice
When you call me up so often, I really don't have a choice
You're talking lie you know me, and wanna be my friend
But thats really too late now, I won't try it once again
You may think that I'm loser, that I don't really care
You may think that it's all forgotten, but you should be aware
'Cause I've learned to get revenge, and I swear you'll experience that some day
I'm sitting down here, but hey, you can't see me
Kinda invisible, you don't sense my stay
Not really hiding, not like a shadow
Just thought I would join you for one day
I'm sitting down here, but hey, you can't see me
Kinda invisible, you don't sense my stay
Not really hiding, not like a shadow
Just thought I would join you for one day
You seem to wanna hurt me, no matter what I do
I'm telling just a couple, but somehow it gets to you
But I've learned how to get revenge and I swear you'll experience that some day
I'm sitting down here, but hey, you cant see me
Kinda invisible, you don't sense my stay
Not really hiding, not like a shadow
Just thought I would join you for one day
I'm sitting down here, but hey, you cant see me
Kinda invisible, you don't sense my stay
Not really hiding, not like a shadow

I'm sitting down here, but hey, you cant see me

Stephen Fretwell: Leeds Brudenell Social Club 7th November 2021

Setlist – The Goshawk And The Gull, Do You Want To Come With?, Rose, Bad Bad You Bad Bad Me, Pink, Oval, Almond, Orange, Something In The Water, Emily, The Ground Beneath Your Feet, Run, Green, New York, Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness, The Long Water, Copper, – (Untitled), William Shatner’s Dog and Embankment.

Sophie & I went ... Opening was George O'Hanlon who we thought was good. Whilst awaiting Stephen Fretwell, a woman I was sat next to, asked if George was Sophie's!

Rather than try to discuss Fretwell's turn here is a review

Stephen Fretwell: Leeds Brudenell Social Club – live review by David Brown 9th November 2021

Stephen Fretwell made a long-awaited return earlier this year with his third album Busy Guy, fourteen years after his second. On Sunday night he played an eventful sold-out show at Leeds Brudenell Social Club.

Technical problems, Ed Sheeran baiting, a fainting in the crowd add to the magic and chaos of a compelling solo show. The set has a false start when the guitar isn’t working and Fretwell has to leave the stage and come back on five minutes later. It’s still not fixed when he returns, which he makes light of, playing The Goshawk And The Gull with the vocal mic doubling up. He jokes with the obviously stressed sound engineer, as a DI box switch does the trick and normal service is returned.

Fretwell takes us on a winding journey through his albums. Debut Magpie features heavily as you’d expect with Do You Want To Come With?, Bad Bad You, Bad Bad Me, Rose, Run, Emily and New York. The last three of them provoke gentle singalongs that add to the songs rather than detract from them. Equally present though, despite his concerns about the reception it might have received, is his masterful comeback Busy Guy.

Where at many gigs new material is a sign for chatter, this audience’s response is total respect. He works his way through the six-minute Almond with lyrical cues at his feet. Yet there’s silence other than the fragile guitar and rich evocative vocals. We join in with harmonies throughout Orange, despite Fretwell telling us he’s never really liked crowd participation. Green and Oval are filled with the regret of love lost. Live, the songs from Busy Guy are even more sparse than on the record and more affecting for it.

There’s a lot of joking with the crowd. He tells us Leeds makes him nervous as it’s close to his hometown of Scunthorpe. The crowd respond with references to the pub he used to drink in and an old school teacher. He lays into Ed Sheeran and jokes about being ginger himself. He’s perturbed when fellow ginger audience members tell him their nicknames at school were “jugs” and “scotch egg bollocks”. He recalls being propositioned by an audience member a few nights earlier in Birmingham. The crowd join in two-way chat respectfully, which adds to the warm feeling that it’s more than just a gig.

The encore starts with a cover of John Prine’s Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness with an audience member holding the lyrics. It also features Busy Guy’s two focus tracks, The Long Water and Embankment, William Shatner’s Dog (one of only two tracks from his second album Man On The Roof) as well as the untitled track – from Magpie that the Arctic Monkeys covered and which Fretwell credits for reawakening his desire to play music.

Good-natured throughout, the hour forty-minute set is a reminder of the enduring quality of Fretwell’s early work. It also reminds us of the sparse, stunning beauty of his most recent. Tonight is more than a gig because of the bond between performer and audience. Fretwell provides a perfect example of how a singer-songwriter can transcend the art and become a real entertainer, even if a reluctant one.

Til Tuesday's "Coming Up Close"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtOgwFzhlyw

One night in Iowa
He and I in a borrowed car
Went driving in the summer
Promises in every star
Out in the distance
I could hear some people laughing
I felt my heart beat back
A weekend's worth of sadness
There was a farmhouse
That had long since been deserted
We stopped and carved our hearts
Into the wooden surface
We thought just for an instant
We could see the future
We thought for once we knew
What really was important

Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home, and oh, by the way
Don't you know that I could make
A dream that's barely half-awake come true
I wanted to say
But anything I could have said
I felt somehow that you already knew

We got back in the car
And listened to a Dylan tape
We drove around the fields
Until it started getting late
And I went back to
My hotel room on the highway
And he just got back
In his car and drove away

Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home, and oh, by the way
Don't you know that I could make
A dream that's barely half-awake come true
I wanted to say
But anything I could have said
I felt somehow that you already knew

Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home
Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home, come on home

Andrew McMahon - "High Dive"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyxvYwCH524

I took the train home, facing backwards
Another hopeless chase
Echo Park, Indian summer
I wrote a new song about your new life
Like steps I retrace
Block letters in your little black notebook, yeah

Flashbacks get me close, I'm almost there

Headlights in the driveway
You stand in the window waiting
The stars are out tonight
One million fires burning
Out there on the high dive
You dance with your headphones on
And I could watch you all night long
Dancing to someone else's song
Oh, dancing to someone else's song
Oh, dancing to someone else's

A black jacket, a blue motorbike
Pass the mission in the moonlight
Teenagers in the alley kissing
Smell of gas burn, saw your street sign
I'm doing eighty in a forty-five
Throwing shadows you could hear if you listen, yeah

Flashbacks get me close, I'm almost there

Headlights in the driveway
You stand in the window waiting
The stars are out tonight
One million fires burning
Out there on the high dive
You dance with your headphones on
And I could watch you all night long
Dancing to someone else's song
Oh, dancing to someone else's song
Oh, dancing to someone else's

Flashbacks get me close
But I was staring at someone else's

Headlights in your driveway
You stand in the window waiting
The stars are out tonight
One million fires burning
Meet me on the high dive
You'll dance with your headphones on
So I could watch you all night long
Dancing to someone else's song (song)
Oh, dancing to someone else's song (song)
Oh, dancing to someone else's song
Someone else's song, to someone else's song
To someone else's, someone else's, someone else's song

Maria McKee - If Love is a Red Dress Hang Me in Rags (1993)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ4f-QwHrbc

My heart is empty
Your eyes are dull
Once we were hungry
Now we are full
These ties that bind us
Can't beat these chains
If love is shelter
I'm gonna walk in the rain
You were my angel
Now, you are real
So like a stranger
Colder than steel
The morning after
Know what you'll bring
If love is a red dress
Well, hang me in rags
Away there goes the fairy tale
Lord, ain't it a shame?
In all this comfort
I can't take the strain
If we played even
I'd be your Queen
But someone was cheatin'
And it wasn't me
I've laid on the table
You held something back
If love is Aces
Give me the Jack

The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, tonight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOG3eus4ZSo

Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave
Without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same
The more you change the less you feel
Believe, believe in me, believe, believe
That life can change that you're not stuck in vain
We're not the same, we're different
Tonight, tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight, tonight
And you know you're never sure
But you're sure you could be right
If you held yourself up to the light
And the embers never fade
In your city by the lake
The place where you were born
Believe, believe in me, believe, believe
In the resolute urgency of now
And if you believe there's not a chance
Tonight, tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight, tonight
We'll crucify the insincere tonight
(Tonight)
We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight
We'll find a way to offer up the night
(Tonight)
The indescribable moments of your life
(Tonight)
The impossible is possible tonight
(Tonight)
Believe in me as I believe in you
Tonight
Tonight, tonight
Tonight

the Mountain Goats - Picture of My Dress

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiStvHJV8hg

Here at a truck stop in New Mexico just before dawn
Somebody's grandma behind the wheel of a big rig
Pulling in with her headlights on
We smoke a cigarette as the sunrise runs riot
Someone's got to break the quiet
And she says, "What are you doing here anyway?
And I smile and say, "You'd never guess"
She holds it up for me by its skinny white shoulder straps
Well I, I take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress
I'm in the bathroom of a Dallas Texas Burger King
And Mr. Steven Tyler is on the overhead speakers
He doesn't want to miss a thing
Out there at the counter
Blending in with the lunchtime crowd
Trying not to laugh out loud
I eat half my crispy chicken club
I get extra mayonnaise, it's a mess
I take the other half out to the parking lot with me
Pop the trunk and take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress
It still looks good, I only wore it once
Nine years ago, nine years and seven months
It may be a long while before the highway
Decides to finally set me free
I'm going to have to chase down the remnants
Of something special that you stole from me
It may be hiding in the sunset
Or in distant corners of the dawn
Or maybe it's gone
But I say some prayers above the engine
I bless everything there is to bless
Run out of gas in the middle of nowhere anyway
Stand there by the roadside smiling
And take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress

Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Loving Feeling

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOnYY9Mw2Fg

You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips
And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips
You're trying hard not to show it
But baby, baby I know it
You lost that lovin' feelin'
Whoa, that lovin' feelin'
You lost that lovin' feelin'
Now it's gone, gone, gone, whoa-oh
Now there's no welcome look in your eyes when I reach for you
And now you're starting to criticize little things I do
It makes me just feel like crying
'Cause baby, something beautiful's dyin'
You lost that lovin' feelin'
Whoa, that lovin' feelin'
You lost that lovin' feelin'
Now it's gone, gone, gone, whoa-oh
Baby, baby, I'd get down on my knees for you
If you would only love me like you used to do, yeah
We had a love, a love, a love you don't find everyday
So don't, don't, don't, don't let it slip away
Baby, baby, baby, baby
I beg you please, please, please, please
I need your love, need your love
I need your love, I need your love
So bring it on back, so bring it on back
Bring it on back, bring it on back
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
Whoa, that lovin' feelin'
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
'Cause it's gone, gone, gone
And I can't go on, whoa-oh
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
Whoa, that lovin' feelin'
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
'Cause it's gone, gone, gone

Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBmAPYkPeYU

We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds (suspicious minds)
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
So if an old friend I know
Stops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?
Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see the tears are real, I'm crying
(Yes I'm crying)
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds (suspicious minds)
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
Oh, let our love survive
I'll dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die
When honey, you know I've never lied to you
Mmm, yeah, yeah
We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?
Well, don't you know I'm caught in a trap?
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Well, don't you know I'm caught in a trap?
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Well, don't you know I'm caught in a trap?
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Well, don't you know I'm caught in a trap?
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Well, don't you know I'm caught in a trap?
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Well, don't you know I'm caught in a trap?
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much, baby

Sting - Fields Of Gold

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLVq0IAzh1A

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold
So she took her love
For to gaze a while
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
Will you stay with me?
Will you be my love?
Upon the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold
See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold

The Who - Baba O'Riley (Shepperton Studios / 1978)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu9HhYv0C7E

Out here in the fields
I fight for my meals
I get my back into my living
I don't need to fight
To prove I'm right
I don't need to be forgiven
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Don't cry
Don't raise your eye
It's only teenage wasteland
Sally, take my hand
We'll travel south 'cross land
Put out the fire
And don't look past my shoulder
The exodus is here
The happy ones are near
Let's get together
Before we get much older
Teenage wasteland
It's only teenage wasteland
Teenage wasteland, oh, yeah
Teenage wasteland
They're all wasted!

Stephen Fretwell - New York

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5K6xu47AOI

Please can we go away
Get out of here
Somehow today.
For a place that I've heard on the radio
Never sleeps.
I'll get a job in a bar,
You could be a waitress and serve cheap cigars
To fat mustachio men in suits, you'll look cute.
Fuck what they say
Fuck it if they talk
It really don't matter.
We're going to New York.
Oh, hold on to me.
I'm gonna get you out
I'm gonna set you free.
To a place that I've heard on the radio.
Never sleeps.
I'll get a job in a bar,
You could be a waitress and serve cheap cigars
To fat mustachio men in suits, you'll look cute.
Fuck what they say
Fuck it if they talk
It really don't matter.
We're going to New York

Maria McKee - Breathe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdJOpb6dJlY

At first I was scared when I opened up my head
And the motor that was runnin' was the mind of you
I was scared when I looked at my reflection
And the shine I saw were the eyes of you

I was scared when you touched my lips
And the breath I took was a breath that shook me with a shock
Like a flame as eternal as a song and the song is you and I

I will let you breathe through me
I will let you be with me

Whenever I'm alone and you're lost out there
I can feel you breathe ‘cause our lungs we share
Whenever I'm alone anytime anywhere
I can feel your heart beat ‘cause our blood we share

I was scared when you came into my room
The walls became the sea, your voice was the moon
Oh when you rocked me in your arms
Like a song, a wave on the tide of you and I

I will let you breathe through me
I will let you be with me

My heart beats your blood
Your breath fills my lungs
Your heart beats my blood
My breath fills your lungs

I was scared when you came into my room
The walls became the sea, your voice was the moon
Oh when you rocked me in your arms
Be with me...

I will let you breathe through me
I will let you...
I will let you...
I will let you...

Now you know me

You know how proud I am

And what I'm gonna tell you now

Won't be easy to say

Before I left your side

Ooh, I was so happy then

But I've been so lonely

Since I've been away

Oh, baby

I've tried and I know I can't make it alone

It's such a hard way to go

I just can't make it alone

There's something in my soul

That will always (always)

Lead me back to you

What can I say now?

Sorry is just not good enough

I couldn't blame you if you hurt me now

The way I hurt you then

But who else can I turn to?

Oh, baby, I'm begging you

Won't you reach out for my dying soul?

And make me live again

Oh, baby, it's so hard

I've tried and I know I can't make it alone

It's such a hard way to go

I just can't make it alone

There's something in my soul (in my soul)

That will always

Lead me back to you

I just can't make it by myself

Just can't make it byself

Baby, help me I've tried and I know I can't make it alone

It's such a hard way to go

And I can't make it alone

There's something in my soul (in my soul)

That will always (always)

Lead me back to you

Oh, help me (Please help me)

You know I need you (I need you)

I'm saying that I need you

I just can't make it by myself (I just can't make it by myself)

I just can't make it all alone (I just can't make it all alone)

I just can't make it by myself (I just can't make it by myself)

Lone Justice - Shelter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvo9MbTkUbE

Well all right you gave it all up for a dream
Fate proved unkind
To lock the door and leave no key
You're unsure
Well baby I'm scared too
When the world crushes you

[Chorus]
Let me be you're shelter shelter
From the storm outside
Let me be your shelter shelter
From the endless tide

Disillusion has an edge so sharp
It tears at your soul
And leaves a stain upon your heart
I need you to wash mine clean
You've felt it too
And you need me

[Chorus]

Your struggle with darkness has left you blind
I'll light the fire in your eyes

[Chorus]

Your struggle with darkness has left you blind
I'll light the fire in your eyes

[Chorus]

Let me be your shelter shelter shelter shelter shelter

Allman Brown & Liz Lawrence - Sons and Daughters

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eru8DlHoOFM

And I will hold you tight
Like the moon in the arms of the sky
And I will keep you warm
I will build a fire in this house
And I'll build a fire
You fetch the water and I'll lay the table
And in our hearts
We still pray for sons and daughters
And all those evenings
Out in the garden, with red red wine
These quiet hours turning to years
And I, I'll wrap myself
Around your heart
I'll be the walls of his heart
And I, I'll keep a light on
To call you back home
And I'll build a fire
You fetch the water and I'll lay the table
And in our hearts
We still pray for sons and daughters
And all those evenings
Out in the garden, with red red wine
These quiet hours turning to years
And it's all to come
For now we're still young
Just building our kingdom
But it's all to come
And I'll build a fire
You fetch the water and I'll lay the table
And in our hearts
We still pray for sons and daughters
And all those evenings
Out in the garden, with red red wine
These quiet hours turning to years
It's all to come
For now we're still young

Counting Crows - American Girls

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ_MUfryl-w

She comes out on Fridays every time

Stands out in a line

I could have been anyone she'd seen

She waits another week to fall apart

She couldn't make another day

I wish it was anyone but me

I could have been anyone you see

She had something breakable just under her skin

American girls are weather and noise

Playing the changes for all of the boys

Holding a candle right up to my hands

Making me feel so incredible

She comes out of closets every night

But then she locks herself away

Where she could keep everything from me

I could have been anyone you see

She's nothing but porcelain underneath her skin

American girls are weather and noise

Playing the changes for all of the boys

Holding a candle right up to my hand

Making me feel so incredible

Little shiver shaking me everyday

But I could get this same thing anywhere

So if she goes away

Well, it's alright and I'm ok

Hey, she said come back again tonight

And I said, I might, I might, I might

She said, well that's alright

If it's alright, it's alright with you

If it's alright, if it's alright with me

I waited for an hour last Friday night

She never came around

She took almost everything from me

I'm going through my closets

Trying on her clothes, almost everyday

I could have been anyone you see

I wish it was anyone but me

Nothing but pills and ashes under my skin

American girls oh are weather and noise

Playing the changes for all of the boys

Holding a candle right up to my hand

Making me feel so incredible

If I make you cry, you tell me why

I'll try again, if you'll let me try

American girls are feathers and cream

Coming to bed so edible

American girls, oh

American girls

American girls

Oh, oh, oh, oh

American girls, oh

American girls American girls

 Oh, oh, oh, oh

You made me cry

You made me cry

You made me cry

Yeah, you made me cry

You made me cry

Hey, Miss American Girl

Oh, oh, oh, yeah

Maria McKee , I Wish I Was Your Mother

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anMDqp0pXUA&fbclid=IwAR19vusRailCvdw95axmLk42rltU1Gsggp-0-ai7oXnybXVu5Ul3LeXpXAU

I scream at you for sharing
I curse you just for caring
I hate the clothes you're wearing, they're so pretty
I tell you not to see me
I tell you not to feel me
I make your life a drag, it's such a pity

I watch your warm glow palin'
I watch your sparkle fadin'
As you realize you're failin' 'cause' you're so good
Oh, I don't mean to upset you
But there's so much crime to get through
If I could make it easier then I would

I wish I was your mother, I wish I'd been your father
And then I would have seen you, would have been you as a child
Played houses with your sisters and wrestled with all your brothers
And then who knows, I might have felt a family for a while

It's no use me pretending
You give and I do the spending
Is there a happy ending, I don't think so
'Cause even if we make it
I'll be too far out to take it
You'll have to try and shake it from my head

I wish I was your mother, I wish I'd been your father
And then I would have seen you, would have been you as a child
Played house with your sisters and wrestled with all your brothers
And then who knows, I might have felt a family for a while

Konstantine · Something Corporate

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkUJkKtF_LE

I can't imagine all the people that you know
And the places that you go
When the lights are turned down low
And I don't understand
All the things you've seen
But I'm slipping in between
You and your big dreams
It's always you in my big dreams

And you tell me
That it's over
But I can't stand here in a patch of four-leaf clover
And you're restless
And I'm naked
You gotta get out
You can't stand to see me shaking
No, could you let me go
I didn't think so

And you don't want to be here in the future
So you say
The present's just a pleasant
Interruption to the past
And you don't wanna look much closer
'Cause you're afraid to find out all this hope
You had sent into the sky by now had crashed
And it did because of me

And then you bring me home
Afraid to find out that you're alone, no
And I'm sleeping in your living room
We don't have much room
To live

And I had dreams that I would learn to play guitar
Maybe cross the country
Become a rockstar
And there was hope in me
That I could take you there
But dammit you're so young
But I don't think I care
And if I hurt you then I'm sorry
To just this guilt has got the best of me

And then you bring me home
'Cause we both know what it's like to be alone, no
And I'm dreaming in your living room
But we don't have much room
To live

And Konstantine is coming down the stairs
Doesn't she look good
Standing in her underwear?
And I've been thinking, what I've been thinking, you know
But she's been drinking
And it doesn't get me anywhere

And Konstantine came walking down the stairs
And all that I could do
Was touch her long blond hair
And I was thinking, what I was thinking ya know
But we've been drinking and it doesn't get me anywhere

This is because I can spell confusion with a K
It's hard to like it
It's to dying in another's arms
And why I had to try it

It's to Jimmy Eat World
And those nights in my car
But this time I'm alone
And I don't see those stars

I'm not your star
Isn't that what you said
What you thought this song meant
You thought this song meant

If this is what it takes
To lie in my mistakes
And live with what I did to you
And all the things I put you through

I always catch the clock it's 11:11
And now you wanna talk
It's not hard to dream
You'll always be my Konstantine

They'll never hurt you like I do
No, they'll never hurt you like I do
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

This is to a girl who got into my head
With all these pretty things she did
Hey baby, you know that you keep me up in bed

It's to a girl who got into my head
With all the fucked-up things I did
Hey maybe baby, you could keep me up in bed

My Konstantine
Spin around me like a dream
We played out on this movie screen
And I said
Did you know I've miss you
Did you know I've miss you
Did you know I've miss you
Did you know I miss you
Did you know I miss you
Did you know I miss you
Did you know I miss you

God, I miss you

And then you bring me home
And we'll go to sleep but this time not alone
No no
And you'll kiss me in your living room
And you see, no, that I've been missing in my living room
'Cause it's all you, yeah this is what I miss, what I miss

We don't have much room
I said, does anybody really need that room?
Because we all need a little bit of room
To live

My Konstantine

 I want you ...

The guilty undertaker sighs
The lonesome organ grinder cries
The silver saxophones say I should refuse you
The cracked bells and washed-out horns
Blow into my face with scorn
But it’s not that way
I wasn’t born to lose you

I want you, I want you
I want you so bad
Honey, I want you

The drunken politician leaps
Upon the street where mothers weep
And the saviors who are fast asleep, they wait for you
And I wait for them to interrupt
Me drinkin’ from my broken cup
And ask me to
Open up the gate for you

I want you, I want you
I want you so bad
Honey, I want you

How all my fathers, they’ve gone down
True love they’ve been without it
But all their daughters put me down
’Cause I don’t think about it

Well, I return to the Queen of Spades
And talk with my chambermaid
She knows that I’m not afraid to look at her
She is good to me
And there’s nothing she doesn’t see
She knows where I’d like to be
But it doesn’t matter

I want you, I want you
I want you so bad
Honey, I want you

Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit
He spoke to me, I took his flute
No, I wasn’t very cute to him, was I?
But I did it, though, because he lied
Because he took you for a ride
And because time was on his side
And because I . . .

I want you, I want you
I want you so bad
Honey, I want you

Don't think twice, it's all right

 Desolation Row

They’re selling postcards of the hanging
They’re painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They’ve got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they’re restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row

Cinderella, she seems so easy
“It takes one to know one,” she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he’s moaning
“You Belong to Me I Believe”
And someone says, “You’re in the wrong place my friend
You better leave”
And the only sound that’s left
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row
Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
The fortune-telling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love
Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he’s dressing
He’s getting ready for the show
He’s going to the carnival tonight
On Desolation Row

Now Ophelia, she’s ’neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession’s her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah’s great rainbow
She spends her time peeking
Into Desolation Row
Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked so immaculately frightful
As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
And reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row

Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
Inside of a leather cup
But all his sexless patients
They’re trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She’s in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
“Have Mercy on His Soul”
They all play on pennywhistles
You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
From Desolation Row
Across the street they’ve nailed the curtains
They’re getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera
A perfect image of a priest
They’re spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they’ll kill him with self-confidence
After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom’s shouting to skinny girls
“Get Outa Here If You Don’t Know
Casanova is just being punished for going
To Desolation Row”

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
To Desolation Row

Praise be to Nero’s Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody’s shouting
“Which Side Are You On?”
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain’s tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row

Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the doorknob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they’re quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can’t read too good
Don’t send me no more letters, no
Not unless you mail them
From Desolation Row

 Hazel

 Hazel, dirty-blonde hair
I wouldn’t be ashamed to be seen with you anywhere
You got something I want plenty of
Ooh, a little touch of your love

Hazel, stardust in your eye
You’re goin’ somewhere and so am I
I’d give you the sky high above
Ooh, for a little touch of your love

Oh no, I don’t need any reminder
To know how much I really care
But it’s just making me blinder and blinder
Because I’m up on a hill and still you’re not there

Hazel, you called and I came
Now don’t make me play this waiting game
You’ve got something I want plenty of
Ooh, a little touch of your love

 Everything Is Broken

Broken lines, broken strings
Broken threads, broken springs
Broken idols, broken heads
People sleeping in broken beds
Ain’t no use jiving
Ain’t no use joking
Everything is broken

[Verse 1]
Broken bottles, broken plates
Broken switches, broken gates
Broken dishes, broken parts
Streets are filled with broken hearts
Broken words never meant to be spoken
Everything is broken

Seem like every time you stop and turn around
Something else just hit the ground

[Verse 2]
Broken cutters, broken saws
Broken buckles, broken laws
Broken bodies, broken bones
Broken voices on broken phones
Take a deep breath, feel like you’re choking
Everything is broken
Every time you leave and go off someplace
Things fall to pieces in my face

[Outro]
Broken hands on broken ploughs
Broken treaties, broken vows
Broken pipes, broken tools
People bending broken rules
Hound dog howling, bullfrog croaking
Everything is broken

The Times They Are A-Changin

The line, it is drawn, the curse, it is cast
The slow one now will later be fast
As the present now will later be past
The order is rapidly fading

And the first one now will later be last
For the times, they are a-changin'

Absolutely Sweet Marie

Well, your railroad gate, you know I just can’t jump it
Sometimes it gets so hard, you see

I just sitting here beating on my trumpet
With all these promises you left for me

But where are you tonight, sweet Marie?

[Verse 2]
Well, I waited for you when I was half sick
Yes, I waited for you when you hated me
Well, I waited for you inside of the frozen traffic
Yeah, when you knew I had some other place to be
Now, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?

[Bridge 1]
Well, anybody can be just like me, obviously
But then, now again, not too many can be like you, fortunately

[Verse 3]
Well, six white horses that you did promise
Were finally delivered down to the penitentiary

But to live outside the law, you must be honest
I know you always say that you agree
Alright so where are you tonight, sweet Marie?

[Bridge 2]
Well, I don’t know how it happened
But the riverboat captain, he knows my fate
But everybody else, even yourself
They’re just gonna have to wait
[Verse 4]
Well, I got the fever down in my pockets
The Persian drunkard, he follows me
Yes, I can take him to your house but I can’t unlock it
You see, you forgot to leave me with the key
Oh, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?

[Verse 5]
Well, I been in jail when all the mail showed
That a man can’t give his address out to bad company
And now I stand here lookin’ at your yellow railroad
In the ruins of your balcony
Wondering where you are tonight, sweet Marie

Dignity
Fat man lookin' in a blade of steel
Thin man lookin' at his last meal
Hollow man lookin' in a cottonfield
For dignity

Wise man lookin' in a blade of grass
Young man lookin' in the shadows that pass
Poor man lookin' through painted glass
For dignity

Somebody got murdered on New Year's Eve
Somebody said dignity was the first to leave
I went into the city, went into the town
Went into the land of the midnight sun

Searchin' high, searchin' low
Searchin' everywhere I know
Askin' the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?

Blind man breakin' out of a trance
Puts both his hands in the pockets of chance
Hopin' to find one circumstance
Of dignity

I went to the wedding of Mary-lou
She said ÒI don't want nobody see me talkin' to youÓ
Said she could get killed if she told me what she knew
About dignity

I went down where the vultures feed
I would've got deeper, but there wasn't any need
Heard the tongues of angels and the tongues of men
Wasn't any difference to me

Chilly wind sharp as a razor blade
House on fire, debts unpaid
Gonna stand at the window, gonna ask the maid
Have you seen dignity?

Drinkin' man listens to the voice he hears
In a crowded room full of covered up mirrors
Lookin' into the lost forgotten years
For dignity

Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues
Said he'd give me information if his name wasn't used
He wanted money up front, said he was abused
By dignity

Footprints runnin' cross the silver sand
Steps goin' down into tattoo land
I met the sons of darkness and the sons of light
In the bordertowns of despair

Got no place to fade, got no coat
I'm on the rollin' river in a jerkin' boat
Tryin' to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity

Sick man lookin' for the doctor's cure
Lookin' at his hands for the lines that were
And into every masterpiece of literature
for dignity

Englishman stranded in the blackheart wind
Combin' his hair back, his future looks thin
Bites the bullet and he looks within
For dignity

Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed
Dignity never been photographed
I went into the red, went into the black
Into the valley of dry bone dreams

So many roads, so much at stake
So many dead ends, I'm at the edge of the lake
Sometimes I wonder what it's gonna take
To find dignity

My Back Pages

Crimson flames tied through my years
Rollin' high and mighty traps
Countless fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet our legends, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow.

Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.
Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate," I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundations deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Tonight I'll be staying here with you

Throw my ticket out the window
Throw my suitcase out there, too
Throw my troubles out the door
I don't need them any more
'Cause tonight I'll be staying here with you

I should have left this town this morning
But it was more than I could do
Oh, your love comes on so strong
And I've waited all day long
For tonight when I'll be staying here with you

Is it really any wonder
The love that a stranger might receive
You cast your spell and I went under
I find it so difficult to leave

I can hear that whistle blowin'
I see that stationmaster, too
If there's a poor boy on the street
Then let him have my seat
'Cause tonight I'll be staying here with you

Throw my ticket out the window
Throw my suitcase out there, too
Throw my troubles out the door
I don't need them any more
'Cause tonight I'll be staying here with you
